There are several insurance policies you are “required” to purchase. For example, the state mandates that to drive a car you must purchase auto liability insurance, if you lease or finance a car you must have physical damage insurance too. If you purchased a home and have a mortgage on it, you must purchase homeowners insurance.

Buying your first home is an experience fraught with potential pitfalls. One of the best ways to avoid falling into those “pits” is to rely on expert advice when buying your home. Get recommendations from friends, relatives and co-workers to find a real estate agent, attorney and mortgage lender whose experience can save you a lot of money and headaches. This is not the time to do a favor for someone whose brother-in-law is “just starting out”!

Texting & Driving in New York |

So we start this week with a new law on the books in New York that bans texting while driving. Critics of the law say that it’s a weak law since it’s a secondary enforcement law; which means a driver will be ticketed for texting only if they’re pulled over for a primary offense like speeding. Nevertheless the issue for business owners isn’t necessarily the fact that there’s a new law on the books or enforcement, it’s how do you control this behavior of your employees while driving company vehicles or driving their own vehicles on company business?
The intent of the law is of course to stem the tide of horrific accidents that occur when drivers are distracted by texting. Some estimates say that drivers are 23 more times likely to get into an accident than non-distracted drivers.
If we look at this as a behavior that requires modification, then how do we encourage that modification? In the business setting and specifically in managing risk we frequently have to ...

There was an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal this weekend about solving the post Halloween dilemma of what to do with all that left over candy. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125702566786620951.html
In the Rockland County / New City, NY area, Halloween was a rainy day so the volume of Trick or Treaters was definitely lower than expected. Rather than letting that candy sit around (or eating it all!) there are lots of opportunities to donate it! Soup kitchens, shelters, and food pantries may have good uses for it, but make sure you call first to see if they need or accept it. The WSJ article also indicates that Operation Shoebox which sends care packages to U.S. Troops stationed overseas can use the candy! Go to Operationshoebox.com for more information!

A recent IRMI article by Robin K. Olson highlighted the inherent dangers of operating all-terrain vehicles or ATVs. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) some 600 people are killed every year and another 122,000 are injured due to ATV accidents. Tragically, approximately one third of these deaths and injuries involve children under age 16. Absent legislation banning children from operating ATVs or at the very least making helmet use mandatory this trend is likely to escalate as ATVs are increasingly popular in resort settings, rural communities and even suburban areas.
From an insurance perspective, it’s important to note that liability protection for an ATV accident is not covered by a standard personal automobile policy and may not be covered by your homeowners policy. The potential gap can be closed in certain situations with an endorsement to the homeowner’s policy, or through a recreational vehicle policy specifically geared for non-traditional vehicles ...
